Sorting Concept For Kids

Let's move forward. The next step in conceptual learning is sorting. Fundamental mathematical concepts not only include numbers, addition and subtraction. But it includes much more! Sorting is one of the important building blocks in logical and numerical analysis. Studies have shown that kids involved in sorting and contrasting activities do better in mathematics later on. Sorting means to group things on the basis of their similar attribute.

Why sorting?

It develops the ability to judge, compare, arrange, critical thinking, logical reasoning etc. It is a simple activity which forms the foundation of higher mathematical concepts. If there are beads, pennies, toffees, toy-blocks etc. Ask your kid to sort out and find out what he will do? He will definitely develop the abilities to compare, organized thoughts, arrangement and order etc.

I have endless ideas about sorting out different things which are already in our house.

Activity #1

Provide your kid with the number of alphabets (flashcards, magnetic toys or wooden blocks). And then ask them to Sort out the alphabet with the hole and without a hole.

Activity #2:

Provide your kid with fruits (flashcards or you can prepare at home as well). Ask them to sort on the basis of colours.

Activity #3

Provide your kids with fruits. Ask them to sort out, whether it has seed or stone inside.

Activity #4:

It is a little bit tough.
Provide your kids with many shapes (different shapes, colours, sizes). Ask them to sort on the basis of edges. For young kids, limit yourself to 4 edges.
The circle has no edge
Triangle has three edges
Rectangle, square, rhombus, a parallelogram has 4 edges.
