I faced lot of difficulties with my first kid. Actually, the kids can not grip properly. At the first step, it is useless to give them tracing book. Instead you provide your kid with blank copy and a small crayon piece, or small pencil. Why do I emphasis on small? Because kids can easily grip small crayon or pencil. 

There are many other better alternatives available for writing skills like wipe/clean books and magnetic boards. Have a look at them.
